David is more wrong than right. Russian GPS is Glonass, not Glasnost. PLBs do not communicate with any towers lined up along the coast. It works worldwide, so how would a tower in North America help you when you're in New Zealand? PLBs communicate with several different satellite networks, in low earth orbit, medium earth orbit, and geostationary earth orbit. They don't last 36 hours, they last 24 hours. ACR recommends you test the PLB once per month, not once per year. It has enough excess battery capacity for 60 tests. You don't have to contact the company or arrange anything to do the self test. It's a button press on the unit. Both these units know where they are via internal GPS receiver. Both transmit those exact coordinates to the SARSAT satellites. The screen on the View model only serves to confirm that your message has been received. The thirty minute rescue time is pretty much baloney. Most (but not all) distress signals are received within 5 minutes, but depending on the PLB and what kind of satellite picks it up, some require a second satellite pass to acquire your position. That delay alone could be over 90 minutes. There's also a delay while the message is bounced between the Air Force, Coast Guard, local SAR coordinator, county sheriff, etc. And finally it takes time to dispatch someone out to you. Most rescues probably fall in the 1-3 hour range for first contact with SAR, but it's entirely possible it could take longer.

I wish you would have included how to get a 40 foot boat with 3 engines in there. I see big boys in there, but there must be a very deliberate method for getting over there so I haven’t been yet because I can’t follow someone who has as much to lose as they are already there when I get there. I always get invited by guys with smaller boats that are already there and don’t care about water depth, but I know there must be a way on any tide.

Thanks for this! I have been reading about this but couldn't find details/photos about it. The north end of Honeymoon Island is one of the spots we anchor up but have south of that. We launch out of the Sponge Docks in Tarpon /Anclote River. A couple of questions. Is this by "Pelican Cove" area that I see on Google Maps? Coming in from the north, is it accessible from the intercoastal? Can you still anchor up (intercoastal side) at low tide?

However it's nothing new ,mabie for these guys but not locals .

This was definitely not one of my better days.

Particularly dangerous because water gets very shallow in areas around Anclote. Especially as you work inland. With that visibility and if it was a low tide, you can be in the shoals before you know it. Stay safe guys.
